Chapter 19
Approaching Village of Lumina
Team A.T. had wasted little time and had hustled back to the vehicles. Keeping headlights off, Adler and Slade shifted into gear. Tires spun, kicking up loose dirt and gravel before connecting with pavement.
Above the noise of engines, they heard James' voice in their earpieces. "Eyes on transport; landing lights on."
"Copy," Grant responded, taking a glance at his watch, showing 0405. The Alpha Group had arrived. He leaned toward the front seats. "Step on it!"
Adler pressed the accelerator, then gave a quick look over his shoulder. "We still want that phone?!"
"Might be our last chance to find out what the hell's going on and whether it's safe to make contact. So the answer's, yeah, we do."
Two large tanker trucks passed, heading toward Constanta, just as the Team's vehicles approached the small village of Lumina. As everywhere else, all lights were out: streets, homes, stores. The issue now was trying to find a working phone.
Grant called Slade, assigning him the north/south streets, specifically to find a blue phone booth. Adler started east. Within five minutes, Slade reported finding the specific phone booth. Grant got the directions, then had Slade drive back to Adler. Quietly exiting the car, Grant took off jogging to the specified phone booth, keeping a hand on his pistol, his eyes on his surroundings, and staying close to buildings, while hurrying to call Scott Mullins. While Grant was gone, the men quickly reloaded their Makarovs. Novak kept an eye on Orlov.
